HIYYAAAAA! The last time we attended an evening of disgusting contemporary metal was Bonecrusher Fest way back in 2012, when we had slightly less dramatic facial hair but were no less incontinent. Now it is time once again to prepare thy underwear as one of Germany’s best metal bands Caliban are dragging four of their brutal peers across the nation. Next week they land in Neukölln – the centre of metal and Instagram in Berlin.

caliban

Formed in the forest of Hattingen, Germany in the late 90s, Caliban have released an epic nine albums before confidently creeping their way into their native top 10 music charts this year with current record, Ghost Empire. A formidable live act that comes with almost two decades of playing live – I predict 10.5 circle pits per riff.

Joining them is one of Australia’s best metal exports, I Killed The Prom Queen, who recently returned from a lengthy hiatus with vicious sounding third LP, Beloved. One track of which features guest vocals from John of The Ghost Inside, cause you know they’re mates innit. Here is the video for epic choon “Thirty One & Sevens”:

Also appearing at the United Colours of Riffaton Bazaar™ are the aforementioned Ghost Inside and The Devil Wears Prada – which is indeed the new sludge super-group featuring cast members from the 2006 smash hit film of the same name. Honest.

Foreplay comes from Switzerland’s only metalcore act Breakdown Of Sanity, which is exactly what you will suffer if you manage to survive the evening.

Win the gift that keeps on giving: a coffee subscription from Silo!

by James Glazebrook

[EDIT: this competition is now closed. Click here to see if we’re running any open competitions]

For us, this year’s coffee discovery was Silo, a beautiful Friedrichshain cafe run by Aussie expats with exceptional taste in the black stuff. We’re pleased to announce that Silo are now sharing their obsession with all things caffeinated beyond the Berlin borders with a curated coffee subscription service – AND that they’ve given us three months’ worth of coffee to giveaway! Introducing your prize:

The Silo Curated Coffee Subscription is a guided tour through what we, the owners and operators of Silo, a specialty coffee shop in Berlin, think is the best coffee available.

We will be sending out the best coffees that we can get our hands on. Subscribers can expect to receive coffee from renowned German roasters such as The Barn, Bonanza and Five Elephant on a regular basis, as well as some fantastic roasters from overseas including Drop Coffee, Coffee Collective, and Workshop. We are always looking for the finest coffees of the season and we will be sending out the best we can find. When we are able to, we will reach further afield and bring some coffees back from other renowned coffee roasting countries like Australia and the US.

At the start of every month we select and send one 250g (or 1/2lb) bag of freshly roasted coffee to you. We select one filter and one espresso every month, and you can subscribe to either. If required, we can also grind your coffee to suit your equipment. We select your coffee with the aim of sending out a diverse and interesting range of coffee from a wide range of origins, roasters and profiles.

We have a three month coffee subscription to give away, worth €35! To find out how to win, scroll down…

HOW TO WIN A THREE MONTH SILO CURATED COFFEE SUBSCRIPTION.

Just answer this question in the comments below:

Silo’s first coffee selections were Gichithaini AA (blackcurrant, raspberry with wonderful mouthfeel) and La Divina Providencia (muted maraschino cherry balanced acidity with a syrupy body of fudge/caramel).

If you had to produce a coffee inspired by Berlin, what would it be called and what would it taste like?

You have until 6pm on Friday 27th December. Good luck!

The Boring Bit (yawn, RULES):

2. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON!

by James Glazebrook

[EDIT: this competition is now closed. Click here to see if we’re running any open competitions]

If you’re a fan of this blog, you’ll know that we recently launched our first book, What I Know About Germans: 101 Observations. Well, if you haven’t bought a copy yet, here’s your chance to win one – by telling us what you know about Berliners.

We’ve already written about how Germans stare, love their dogs and are refreshingly comfortable about nudity, but what makes Berliners special? According to our article You know you’re a Berliner when…, daily acts of crazy, lost weekends and regular Berlinergasms are signs that you belong here, but what about the people who were born and raised in the Hauptstadt? How are Berliners different to people from the rest of Germany?

We’d love to hear from you, and in return we’re giving away a copy of the beautiful print version of What I Know About Germans – plus one of these awesome überlin tote bags! Scroll down to find out how to win.

Win 2 tickets to the Vans Warped Tour!

by James Glazebrook

[EDIT: this competition is now closed. Click here to see if we’re running any open competitions]

By Mike T West.

Next week überlin shall continue its slow decline into being the grumpy old gits at the back of the venue during the very first Vans Warped Tour date in Berlin!

Scroll down to pick up a pair of free tickets, or keep it locked for our list of five bands you really need to see!

1. Parkway Drive

It’s a close call between these Aussie metalcore gods and the next band for the most bum wee expelled in anticipation. Parkway are celebrating ten years of colossal beatdowns and, um, surfing, so prepare yourself for what will probably be the biggest moshpit/brodown of all time.

2. Enter Shikari

Yes, Enter Shikari.

3. RDGLDGRN

Probably the most sore thumb band of the day will inevitably be one of the most memorable. Simply put, there are not enough good rap rock bands on this planet and RDGLDGRN (Red Gold Green) are here to rectify that. And some guy called Dave Grohl (?) played drums on their debut album…

4. Crossfaith

Did we mention Enter Shikari? Because Crossfaith are like them, only from Japan. They have a song called “Jägerbomb”. Make of that what you will.

5. The Wonder Years

Last on our list is an actual pop-punk band playing a pop-punk festival called The Wonder Years. They’re big favourites of ours so we’re mega pumped to hear their refreshing brand of melodic rock songs about touring, girls and “keeping it real”. POP PUNK AIN’T DEAD!

HOW TO WIN 2 X TICKETS FOR THE VANS WARPED TOUR AT ARENA ON 9TH NOVEMBER:

Ready to join the kids in the pit? Just answer this question in the comments below:

Which band are you most looking forward to?

You have until 6pm on Sunday 3rd November. Good luck!

The Boring Bit (yawn, RULES):

1. You must be at least 18 years old to enter.
2. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON!
3. We will keep a record of each comment in a database and then a random number generator picks the winner.
4. Remember to include your full (real) name or we won’t be able to put you on the guestlist!
5. We will announced the winners via our Facebook page on Monday 4th November.

Vans Warped Tour Berlin 2013 is at Arena, Eichenstraße 4, 12435, Samstag 9th November from 1pm until bedtime.
