Music Montag: Emika (Chris Isaak cover)

by James Glazebrook

Emika Wicked Game

Damn, Emika is good at covers! Last summer, we posted her version of Radiohead’s “Exit Music (For a Film)”, and now the Berlin-based star has released her take on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”, from her forthcoming album Dva. Em strips back the sex-on-the-beach classic, with her ghostly vocals floating over the top of plaintive piano and delicate beats, suggesting that her sophomore Ninja Tune release will be more orientated towards headphones than dancefloors.

You can download “Wicked Game” for free by signing up to the Emika mailing list hereDva drops on Ninja Tune on June 10, 2013; follow Emika on Facebook for news and updates.

Emika red lips

How come artists based in Berlin keep covering Radiohead? Because of the same impeccable taste that brought them here, probably. Hot on the heels of PHIA’s version of “15 Step”, comes an Emika take on “Exit Music (For a Film)”, recorded for Musikexpress’ Tribute to OK Computer. Check out the Ninja Tune star’s wonky future-garage rework after the jump.

Music Montag: PHIA (Radiohead cover)

Australian-born, Berlin-based PHIA covering “15 Step”, from Radiohead‘s In Rainbows:

Cool huh? We found out about PHIA when the waitress in our local Thai restaurant recognised us and pitched us about a special house concert happening this Friday. Only in Berlin!

Turns out our wait staff was OOi, a classically-trained musician who’s going to perform a solo viola work, a collaboration, and is also going to VJ for PHIA. As for the headliner, she’s going to work her magic armed with a kalimba (thumb piano), a set of loop pedals, and maybe some more rearrangements (scroll down for a Fleet Foxes cover). Music Montag: Modeselektor with Thom Yorke

by James Glazebrook

What was I just saying about my obsession with Modeselektor and their labelmates’ output? Well the new German kings of the music video have just released the follow-up to their cutesy “Berlin” promo, with something altogether darker and more spectacular. Featuring vocals by Thom Yorke, a dancer/puppeteer resembling the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and psychedelic animation, here is “This”:
