We loved last week’s ITB Berlin travel trade show, not least because of the venue. We may not have blagged free flights to New Zealand, but we did come away with photos of the Internationales Congress Centrum (ICC) – which rivals Berlin’s TV Tower for retro-futuristic awesomeness. Check it out!

  • Fuchsbau

By night, Fuchsbau (literally, “foxhole”) on Planufer is the smokiest raucherbar I’ve never seen. But on the weekend it becomes one of our favourite brunch spots in Graefekiez, thanks to its soft-boiled eggs on toast with chives, salsa and two types of mustard. I don’t know if they consider it their signature dish, but it’s so good that our Irish friends know der Fuchsbau only by their name for it: The Egg. They also have DJs and live music, if you’re into that kind of thing.

  • Modulor

    Category: ,

Move over RSVP, we’ve found a new favourite paper porn palace! Modulor at Moritzplatz more than lives up to its tagline, “material total”, by offering stationary, art supplies and even furniture in all shapes, sizes and colours of the spectrum. The building also houses design studios, picture framers and a couple of cafés, making Modular more of a creative lifestyle brand than just a supply store.

Its concern with both form and function, and blurring of the lines between home and work, reflects what we feel is a very Berlin mindset. In a city where many homes are converted factories and many places of work are in old apartment buildings, why shouldn’t your office be as aesthetically pleasing as your home, and your flat as functional as your office?

Theorising aside, do check out Modulor – chances are you’ll find us wandering aimlessly through its aisles, saying irrational things like “Ooo… I love these! What are they? Can we get one in every colour of the rainbow?” If you experience the same kind of “supply snow blindness”, we recommend using the 3D relief map of Berlin, pictured in the last photo, to reorientate yourself. Yes, that’s where you are…

Did you go to the cafe next door? Try it, I really liked it.

      • James says:

Yeah, really nice. They didn’t make it easy to order café food in the restauranty bit, but once we had food on the way, we really liked it too.

    2. The old modulor on Gneisenaustraße might have been more charming (browsing there felt like a treasure-hunt), but the new modulor is just overwhelming and triggering lots of new ideas. On our first visit it had just opened it’s doors and the racks weren’t fully filled. I’ll be back!

    3. Yepp, it’s the kind of store where you want everything although you might not need anything…Love the restaurant in the Kohldampf store and also that the furniture store sells design by the Danish company HAY (and all the vitra design classic of course)!

      • James says:

I know, the furniture’s amazing! If I was one of the city’s few rich people in Berlin, my penthouse apartment would be full of that stuff!

And well written James so entertaining to read !!!

ohhh i would love a browse through that ….and bella blissx

  • Katie’s Blue Cat

    Category: ,

When we moved to “Kreuzkölln” (ew) seven months ago I would bemoan the lack of decent coffee this side of the Landwehrkanal; now it seems like every other street has an excellent café. Competition is fierce for the title Best Coffee in Berlin, so let me word this carefully: Katie’s Blue Cat produces the smoothest flat white south of Mitte… if you get lucky with the barista. It doesn’t kick like Passenger Espresso‘s double-shot caffeine bomb, and neither is produced as consistently as the velvety creations from The Barn…

Anyway, the real draw at Katie’s is their baked goods, all made in-store. We’re steadily working our way through the range of cookies, flapjacks, cheesecakes, and one-offs like chocolate and peanut butter pie and, on Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie. While our waistlines suffer, our tastebuds rejoice – and we’ll frequent the Blue Cat until we can’t fit through the door. And then we’ll switch to their delivery service(!), until our fingers are too fat to dial. But don’t let the image of our impending morbid obesity put you off – get down to Katie’s Blue Cat for sweet coffee and even sweeter treats.

Thanks for sharing. I am forever on the search for delicous baked goodies that you can’t find in the Berlin bakeries … can’t wait to check this place out the next time I am in the area.

    2. Papa says:

Yep my mouths watering just reading about it ……looks scrummyness!!

      Hello James,
lovely pictures indeed! Thanks a lot!
I love coffee and have to try this Café!
If you haven’t already stumbled into it, you might also want to try Five Elephant Café in Reichenberger Str. It’s close and they serve excellent filter coffees from Kenya, Ethiopia and Costa Rica at the moment.
Oh, and things are gonna get better still in Kreuzkölln! I heard that our Berlin gourmet coffee heros of CoffeeCircle.com are gonna open their own Café + roaster next year.
      Best! Rémond

      • James says:

Thanks for the kind words Rémond. I can’t take credit for the photos though, that’s my wife Zoë.

I’ve been to Five Elephant but for some reason only tried their latté – the typical German take, very very VERY milky. Head great things about their espresso and *love* filter coffee, so I must revisit.

Thanks for the good news about the Coffee Circle café/roastery. Can’t wait for that!

  • Chicks on Speed: Cultural Workshop Now!

    Category: , ,

We’re no art critics, and even if we were, we might not know what to make of Chicks on Speed’s recent retrospective at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien. So rather than try and make sense of the multi-national, multidisciplinary collective’s fusion of fashion, electroclash, DIY ethics, performance art and frequent nakedness… here are some pretty pictures. The exhibition is finished now, but you can see more of what you missed at Kunstraum Kreuzberg’s Facebook page – this art space, in a huge old hospital building, is well worth a visit, no matter what’s showing.

I took that last photo! (After Zo had set the camera up and everything)
They were projecting onto a thin piece of fabric at the entrance to the exhibition – that’s how you get that awesome effect.
