Oh my days! This is the start of an epic week filled with dirty sonic noise here at überlin. We’re DJing at the WASTED RITA AFTER PARTY in Neukölln this Friday and seeing Queens Of The EFFIN’ Stone Age… IN A CASTLE!!?! But daddy always taught us to eat our mains before dessert so here’s some hate-pie from Finland, Rotten Sound.

Dead Remains. Corporate Fuck. Abusement Park. No it’s not a night out at Matrix, but just a selection of songs that Finnish grindcore godfathers Rotten Sound will be playing this Thursday at Magnet. They join fellow extreme pioneers Converge (who we barely survived last year at SO36), in support of their new EP, a five minute acoustic meditation on holistic living in a folk stylee…

    YEAHSHIT!

(This stuff charts well in Finland…)

Now celebrating their twentieth year, Rotten Sound have released eight studio albums, seven EPs and guest-starred on three episodes of Two And A Half Men. Now only two of their original members remain, guitarist Mika Aalto and vocalist Mika Aalto Keijo Niinimaa or “Q” & “G” to their fans. Previous band members have included “K”, “J” and “H” which is surely only a couple of vowels short of an amazing high Scrabble score.

Rotten Sound and Converge are playing at Magnet this Donnerstag from 8pm (doors at 7pm). Tickets can be picked up at all the usual places. See you in “Das Pit”.

    The Ocean

These submerged sludge-metallers are my musical discovery of the year so far: The Ocean. The Berlin-born experimental act recently shook C-Club to its core at their record company’s eponymous Pelagic Fest, even upstaging headliners Cult of Luna – no mean feat! Their challenging sonic brutality, conceptual commitment and obsession with the sea all call to mind Mastadon, while another lazy comparison would be art-alt-metal masters Tool – both of whom The Ocean easily match live. Seriously.

I’m not entirely sure which of the above men rocked my world, because the band’s revolving door lineup has so far featured at least 40 members since 2000, with the one constant being guitarist and songwriter Robin Staps (front and centre). But it was definitely the same group that tore apart Moscow’s Plan B in the video below. Take a deep breath – we’re going under.

  • Win tickets to Pelagic Fest, Berlin’s prog metal masterclass

Scheisse! We’ve barely had time to recover from the decadent sludge-gasm that was Desertfest before we once again don our capes for Pelagic Fest, an entire evening dedicated to pure European progessive metal.

    HEADBANGERS AND MUSIC GEEKS UNITE!

    Pelagic Fest

On Friday May 10th, Berlin-based Pelagic Records are presenting the majority of their label roster on the same stage, banishing the clean spring air well into the night. Expect complicated riffage, virginal sacrifice and beer spilled all at the altar of Prog.

Among the acts appearing are hometown lads The Ocean, who are unleashing their fantastic shiny new sixth album Pelagial. An experimental metal album record around the layers of the sea… WAIT! Come back – this is a concept album for those who don’t like concept albums! Reminiscent of early Mastodon or Tool at their brightest, Pelagial is a strong contender for metal album of the year and a bonafide instant genre classic.

And just when you thought it was safe to go outside again, Sweden’s answer to tinnitus, Cult Of shitting Luna, are headlining in support of their new post-metal masterpiece, Vertikal. Not to be outdone by their Germanic peers, the album’s concept is heavily influenced by Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis and features themes of “machinery, repetition and clear, linear structures.” NERD ALERT!

HOW TO WIN 2 X GUESTLIST SPOTS FOR PELAGIC FEST AT C-CLUB ON 10TH MAY:

Santa Claus really has nothing on the kind gents at Pelagic who are giving away two pairs of tickets to this progmetal masterclass! To win just answer the following question:

If you could record a concept album about Berlin, what would it be called?

You have until 6pm on Saturday 4th May to enter. Good luck!

    The Boring Bit (yawn, RULES):

    1. You must be 18 years or older to enter.
    2. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON!
    3. Our favourite 2 fake concept album titles win a pair of guestlist spots. Simple as.
    4. Remember to include your full (real) name or we won’t be able to put you on the guestlist!
    5. We will announced the winners via our Facebook page on Sunday 5th May.

Cult Of Luna and The Ocean are joined by Koma, EF, Abraham, Kruger, Earthship and Lo! 10/05/2013 at C-Club, Columbiadammit 9-11 from 17:00hr. Tickets are available here.

    Desertfest Berlin 2013 poster

Desertfest Berlin is the “ULTIMATE HEAVYROCKPSYCHODOOM FESTIVAL”, and naturally I’m on the verge of shitting my pants with excitement about it. The 30+ band lineup of this three-day sludgefest reads like a who’s who of the doom and stoner metal subgenres, headlined by the almighty Pentagram, Witchcraft and post-Kyuss stonersupergroup Unida. As well as beardy men with downtuned guitars, Astra Kulturhaus will be playing host to an art exhibition from Arrache Toi Un Oeil (interviewed here) and a delightful sounding Hippie Corner Market. Check out the full lineup below, and you’ll see why überlin is a proud partner of Desertfest Berlin 2013 (within spitting distance of Metal Hammer on the sponsors page!). Um, ROAR.

Mike T West brings the Mosh Montag!

    Comeback Kid

Oodles of top stuff has escaped from Canada: Chromeo, Scott Pilgrim and Due South, to name but a few. This Friday, one of the nation’s harder exports Comeback Kid will chokeslam Friedrichshain in half, as part of the moshtastic 4th annual Mazine Rebellion Tour (Rebellion 4 to the “kids”).

Originally formed earlier this century as a side project, these hardcore Canucks (CBK to the “kids”) are still tearing up stages across the globe. After releasing the cruelly-underrated Symptoms + Cures in 2010, they will soon be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut LP Turn It Around. With a live show that is 200% pure punk – first-distilled at the Melodic HC brewery then fermented over years spent playing festivals, tours and toilets of varying size – Comeback Kid are a sonic dragon punch to the face.

Now in its fourth iteration, the Rebellion Tour has been windmilling across Europe this month, and is the only event this weekend where it will be socially acceptable to break someone’s nose. Also appearing are LA mosh architects Terror who will be activiating the pit with their pattented “vogelisms”(Current favourite – “I want to see exactly 17 stagedives during this song. No more. No less.”) Joining them are English metal oiks Your Demise and New Yoik thug cheesecakes, bitch-its-please-mothertuggin’ Madball!

Stike a dirty scene pose with the crew this Friday at Astra Kulturhaus, Revaler Str. 99, from 7pm.
