Is it too early to get excited about the Berlin Festival? Butbutbut… the line-up this year is actually pretty good! Gone are the Britpop hasbeens of 2011, and in their place are the hottest young indie-dance crossover bands, cutting-edge electronica, and a clutch of homegrown talent. The German scene is well-represented this year, by The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, Digitalism, Raop (Rap + Pop) group Cro, and new blood Frittenbude and Etnik – as well as Berlin’s own Modeselektor, Dumme Jungs, I Heart Sharks and Paul Kalkbrenner.

All of that, plus Little Dragon, Grimes, SBTRKT, Orbital AND MORE will make for some difficult choices, but you will definitely find me front-and-centre when Sigur Rós hit the Tempelhof stage, with tears streaming down my stupid emo face. In order to get you as prematurely excited as I am, I’ve compiled a Spotify Playlist: Best of the Berlin Festival 2012 containing some of the guaranteed highlights. Click to listen or grab the link – and GET YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!

Do you know if they publish projected start times for the various acts anywhere? I’m actually going to be in Berlin for an expat blogger meetup that weekend and I’m wondering if it’s worth buying a ticket to try and catch a few big ones (Orbital, Sigur Rós, Miike Snow).

      • James Glazebrook says:

They do, but not until nearer the time. I would guess that Orbital and Sigur Ros (a headliner) will be on later on the main stage, 11-ish, but I’ve no idea about Miike Snow. You might have to buy your ticket and take your chances…

    3. Federico says:

Oh, damn, I can’t go this year. Will I ever manage to see my Sigur Ros live? Please pour some tears for me too…

Interesting to see they’re bringing lots of planes back to Tempelhof for the event :)

    5. Steve says:

Any idea what United Kingdom is listed as in the drop-down list of countries on that form? I can’t find anything that looks like it.

      • Zoë Noble says:

Great question! It looks like that part of the form is in Spanish(!), so you need “Reino Unido”.
And we’re going to see if we can get that changed!

        • Steve says:

I might wait until then. Hopefully they can switch the T’s & C’s to English too :-)

Nice work on “Reino Unido” though.

          • Zoë Noble says:

We’ll let you know if we can get that for you. Campus Party usually happens in Spanish/Portuguese-speaking countries, so I guess this is a legacy from that. Viva Reino Unido!

          • James Glazebrook says:

            Hey Steve,
The country list is now in English, and T&Cs will be shortly.

  • Bread & Butter 2011

    Category: ,

Last week I popped into Bread and Butter, at the now-closed Tempelhof airport, for a change of scene and a much-needed break from the mania of Berlin Fashion Week. This international trade show brought together 600 exhibitors from the worlds of denim, sportswear and street fashion, and is most definitely the place to schmooze and make contacts in the industry. For myself it was important to see what’s going on in print and graphics, and how brands are marketing themselves – and boy were they marketing! From free champagne and massages to half-naked models at the entrances to entice visitors, brands were really making a play to get people inside their stands. I was most impressed with the venue though – details like the luggage carousel being used to showcase books and magazines, departure boards showing times of upcoming events and even passport control booths acting as makeshift information desks, all added to a spectacle that won’t soon be forgotten.

  • A Trip to Tempelhof

    Category:

There’s something very Berlin about Tempelhof. When the former “City Airport” closed in 2008, the land didn’t become the site of yuppie flats, public housing or a big ugly entertainment centre – but a public park. And when it reopened a year ago, it hadn’t been landscaped within an inch of its life, or filled with concessions and other “attractions”, with the “support” of one of the city’s corporate entities.

To this day, it looks like they’ve just hosed down the runway, painted on a bike track and taken away the worst of the debris. (Though they did leave behind the wreckage of a plane the fire crew used to practice on.) Unfortunately you can’t get inside what was once one of the 20 largest buildings in the world, but you admire it from behind a fence, as you can all of the little shed-like structures that used to house generators and the like.

Go early on a weekday (the park opens at 6am) for maximum “just woken up after zombie apocalypse” vibes, or on a sunny weekend to check out all the cheery Berliners running, cycling, rollerblading, windskating, playing with kites, remote control cars and planes, grilling, chilling etc etc. Or for this: Berlin Festival 2011.

wow, zoë, that is spooky! it’s a sign!!

    2. Fritzrl says:

I used to live here — in the airport, that is, during the “Hot Years” of the wall. My job was to spy on the East German military. If you think the place is spooky now, it was even moreso then. I’m so very glad the place is now used for recreation and joy. I’ll have to visit again on my next trip to Berlin.

    3. James says:

      Deal!

    4. Raquel says:

:D the lust is there, hidden somewhere underneath all the dust and pieces of furniture lying around everywhere. I’ll commit once our dates with Steffi are over (hoffentlich).

    5. James says:

      …and the Lust?

    6. Raquel says:

yeah! lets, picnic sounds great :) except I don’t feel like a blogger yet…haven’t had the zeit..

    9. Raquel says:

cool, you went! we’ve been wanting to go since we got here… will do as soon as we’re not spending our weekends on furniture hunting! weekdays at 6a.m. is a little out of my comfort zone.
