    What a great week for Depeche Mode fans! Firstly, Martin Gore has added vocals to the title track of MOTOR‘s brand new album, Man Made Machine. Check out his contribution below, and visit Amazon to pick up a silver foil-packed copy of the album (which also features our other favourite Martin, Billie Ray – Berlin’s queen of electronic soul).

    Then on Friday, I’ll be DJing at Feeling Modey, Feeling Gloomy Berlin’s Depeche Mode party. Click here for full details, but all you *really* need to know is that I’ll be playing back-to-back classics from Mode and their offshoots, and that it will be five times as awesome as my already-pretty-awesome playlist below. It’s going to be MORE THAN A PARTY! (yeah?)

    Defne 1

    Defne was a favourite of ours even before we moved to Berlin. We discovered it while strolling along the Landwehrkanal one spring, took friends there on subsequent trips, and continue to use it as our go-to for intimate mid-range dining. Defne serves a reasonably priced fusion of Mediterranean and Turkish in the leafy surroundings of the quiet canalside street, Planufer. Menu highlights include the generous meze sharing plate, the hilariously named Hungry Wolf (sizzling lamb), the sometime-special lamb shank and dishes made with the fresh seafood available every Friday and Saturday. Booking is advised in summer, when the small restaurant and its pretty terrace fills up, but well worth it.

  • Music Montag: Modeselektor feat. Miss Platnum

    We’re always on the lookout for the best Berlin song, and local boys Modeselektor may have released their hometown’s ultimate anthem. “Berlin”, a Miss Platnum collabo from last year’s Monkeytown album, has been given a new lease of life thanks to this awesome animated video from one of the band’s biggest fans. This clip full of Berlin icons (the TV Tower, kebabs, ravers) started when graphic designer François Chalet contacted Modeselektor with the crazy dream of persuading them to perform at his wedding. We’ll let him tell the rest…

    We want to get married, and we want Modeselektor to play there … They’ll NEVER come and play at a wedding … And we wouldn’t be able to afford them … Weeks later I emailed Monkeytown Records in order to prove to Meike, my future wife, that this idea will always stay an idea … One day later at the phone – Monkeytown: “You contacted us at the perfect moment – we urgently need a good video because someone flaked on us!” One Skype conversation with Modeselektor … 3 weeks of hard work and little sleep … cardboard everywhere … lots of computer crashes and … Modeselektor will play at our wedding – hurray!
