Daily Deutsch Doodle: Hasenbrot
by Guest Blogger
Daily Deutsch Doodles are a series of illustrations based on contributions to the #dailydeutsch Twitter hashtag, aimed at helping people trying to learn German.
Hasenbrot by Mariana, a miserável, a Portuguese artist whose solo showroom exhibition opens today at idrawalot gallery in Neukölln (event details).
Hasenbrot translates into “bunny bread” or “hare bread”, describing the leftover sandwich that was not eaten at work and brought back home by the worker. Apparently, lumberjacks used to claim that the food in question was nibbled by rabbits!
In Austria, a Hasenbrot means old, hard bread to feed bunnies. Maybe that’s an explanation?
Yes, I’m german and LOVE to eat the Hasenbrot from my long gone dad when I was a kid!
That’s a great explanation, thanks!
Hasenbrot. I almost forgot hat this existed! Us kids would love to eat my parents Hasenbrot. Not sure why, maybe because it happens very seldom they brought their sandwich back home again. Never knew where this originated from. Thanks for teaching me something new
No worries! As a not-native speaker trying to uncover the meaning of a long-forgotten word… I *hope* my explanation is correct!
