This is definitely a case of the blind-leading-the-blind, or I hesitate to say the touri-leading-the-touri, but I think it’s:
ein schwarzer Hund; der schwarze Hund; schwarzer Hund.
Is that a German expression?
In my German course we are being taught how to decline adjectives with either a definite or indefinite article, but not ‘free-standing’ adjectives like this. My classmates (and teacher) basically said that no one ever uses free-standing adjectives so why bother learning how to decline them, which is a somewhat strange attitude.
I don’t think an expression per se, but I *think* (could be wrong) that “schwarzer Hund” is correct whether preceded by “ein” or “der”.
